How to Prepare Kids for Family Photos
One of the biggest concerns families have before booking their session is:
"What if my kids don't cooperate?"
The good news is - they don't have to.
As a Gilbert, AZ family photographer who has photographed families for over a decade, I've learned that the best photos happen when kids are allowed to be themselves. Movement, laughter, and connection create the most meaningful images.
If you're still planning your session timing, you may also find this helpful:
Set Expectations in a Positive Way
Instead of telling kids they must "behave," try framing the session as something fun:
Examples:
"We're going to go play together"
"We're going to take some fun pictures"
"We're going to have an adventure"
This helps kids feel relaxed and excited. If you are stressed, they are going to feel that and reflect that in how they act. Do your best to have fun and keep things light yourself and I promise your kids will follow.
Choose the Right Time of Day
Scheduling sessions around your child's schedule can make a huge difference.
Tips:
Avoid nap time
Avoid late evenings if kids tire easily or ensure they get a great mid-day nap before the session.
Bring snacks if needed
Golden hour is usually best for lighting and mood.
Let Kids Be Kids
Some of the most beautiful family photos happen when kids:
Run
Laugh
Hug
Play
These moments create genuine connection, so don’t be afraid to showcase your real moments.
Bring Comfort Items
If your child has:
Favorite toy
Blanket
Stuffed animal
These can help them feel more comfortable.
Keep Outfits Comfortable
Comfortable clothing helps kids move naturally.
If you're unsure what to wear:
Trust the Process
Family sessions are designed to be relaxed. Kids don't need to sit still the entire time.
My approach as an Arizona family photographer is:
Gentle guidance
Playful prompts
Relaxed environment
